Convert STL to OBJ
Convert a validated STL mesh into an OBJ file with triangle geometry and generated face normals.
Supported input and output
Binary or ASCII STL input; geometry-only OBJ output with face normals.
An OBJ made from the triangles you have
The result contains OBJ vertices, triangular faces and recomputed face normals. It can be useful when a downstream mesh editor accepts OBJ more readily than STL. The conversion cannot recover original quads, material assignments or CAD features that are absent from the STL.
How to use this tool
- Select an STL and inspect its preview.
- Choose Convert to OBJ once the model is validated.
- Download the OBJ and confirm the intended units in your next application.
Limitations to check
- Original CAD features and materials cannot be recovered from STL.
- Coordinates stay unchanged. Neither file supplies a reliable physical unit here.
- Degenerate or incomplete meshes must be fixed in the source application first.
File and processing limits
- ASCII/binary STL up to 25 MiB, 750,000 stored vertices and 250,000 triangles.
- Generated mesh output is limited to 64 MiB.
- 30 seconds per mesh job. Browser memory and device speed can impose lower practical limits.
Processing happens in this browser; your file and filename are not uploaded. Cancel, reset or replace the file to stop its worker. Downloads are generated locally.
Questions about this workflow
Does converting to OBJ make the mesh smaller or smoother?
Neither is promised. Text OBJ can be larger than binary STL, and the triangle geometry is retained. Use mesh simplification deliberately if you want fewer triangles.
