Split an STL into Disconnected Components
Split an STL into edge-disconnected components and download a ZIP of separate meshes. Original placement is preserved; no cutting or semantic segmentation.
Supported input and output
One ASCII or binary STL → a ZIP containing one binary STL per edge-connected component.
Separate connectivity, not named objects
Triangles belong to the same component when they share edges after exact coincident positions are matched. Shells that only touch at a point remain separate. A single connected model produces one component even if it visually resembles several parts. Every output retains its original placement so the files can be reassembled in the same coordinate space.
How to use this tool
- Choose one STL that may contain disconnected shells.
- Run Split components and review the component counts and bounds.
- Download the ZIP and open the component STLs using the same intended units as the source.
Limitations to check
- Exact coincident positions are matched for edge connectivity. Near-coincident vertices remain separate; point-touching shells are separate components.
- This is topology separation, not semantic segmentation or a cutting tool. A connected model produces one STL.
- Maximum 64 components; original coordinates are preserved so outputs retain their placement.
File and processing limits
- One STL up to 8 MiB; 150,000 stored vertices and 50,000 triangles.
- At most 64 components; 3 MiB total component STLs and 4 MiB ZIP output.
- 20 seconds per job. Matching exact coordinates determines edge connectivity.
